NIGERIA’S 2019 PRESIDENTIAL POLLS Nigeria went to the polls to elect a fellow who will be their President till May 2023 on the 23rd of February after the original date was shifted at about 0400 hours, which is just four hours to voting time on the scheduled 16th February 2019. The election was to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC which was established by this statue: “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was established by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to among other things organize elections into various political offices in the country. The functions of INEC as contained in Section 15, Part 1 of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution (As Amended) and Section 2 of the Electoral Act 2010 (As Amended)”. Nigeria was to go to the polls to face seventy- three political parties, the highest the nation ever fielded in any election in history. Part of the rules is that every political party was to conduct primaries within the political party in the presence of INEC officials as observers where they elect or choose, by authenticated consensus their Presidential candidate. The main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) fielded, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar a notable politician who has become a veteran of party primaries since 2003. The People’s Democratic Party held its presidential primaries on 5 October 2018, at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Thirteen aspirants contested for the ticket of the PDP, with Atiku Abubakar emerging the winner.

APC Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari was selected as the sole candidate of the All Progressives Congress party primaries held on 29 September 2018. Some other candidates included: ·         Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, former Minister of Special Duties.
The 23rd February election met with different opinions; serious fake news like one saying a Political party wants to abort the declaration of elections through the court; declarations that the elections were peaceful and otherwise through many groups except PDP who alleged massive rigging. The pre-election period had its tale tales like a Governor, El-Rufai of Kaduna State threatening foreign observers who interfere with the polls that they may go back home in body bags. President Buhari gave a body sign by declaring that security agents should deal with ballot snatchers. The PDP had alleged that Buhari had actually died and the person we see was from Sudan, a look alike of Buhari. Unperturbed, INEC declared the following results.

From these tables, we saw that the two principal candidates, both Muslim-Fulani and from the North, Buhari from North West and Atiku from North East, they had strongholds. Buhari controlled Northwest and North East zones. Atiku had strange strongholds in South East and South. So the neutral zones were North Central and South West. These readings will definitely have  implications for the plotting of victory in the post Buhari era of 2023.   However, the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mamood Yakubu on Thursday, 28th February, 2019 presented certificates of election to APC Presidential Candidate, Incumbent Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osibajo. Here is the photosplash.

As at the time of writing, the Presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has gone to the Appeal Court to contest the election results, conduction and other anomalies. According to the constitution, the court of Appeal has 180 days to give judgment. If the litigant is displeased, he can proceed to the Supreme Court where the final verdict will be given. *Written by Rev.
